Winter doesn't fear the cold! If you want to replace a lead-acid battery with a sodium battery, which components need to be replaced? These 4 components must be changed.
With the launch of sodium batteries by Tianan and Super V, CATL has also made it clear that it will start mass production of sodium batteries in 2026. These batteries are not affected by cold in winter and have a long service life. Many users want to replace lead-acid batteries with sodium batteries to enhance the performance of their electric vehicles.
It should be noted that replacing lead-acid batteries with sodium batteries is not as simple as just swapping lead-acid batteries. Besides the battery itself, other components also need to be replaced, especially these four parts which must be changed. Let's take a look together.

Sodium batteries enhance the performance of electric vehicles
If electric vehicles use the currently most advanced sodium batteries, it will significantly enhance the overall performance of the vehicles, especially in the following five aspects:
· No reduction in range in winter: Sodium batteries maintain a capacity of 95% even at -20℃, making the batteries more resistant to cold. Winter won't cause a reduction in the range anymore;
· Electric vehicles can charge as needed: During the winter, if you don't ride the electric vehicle for several months, lead-acid batteries require regular recharging. Sodium batteries don't need this. They can discharge down to 0 volts and can be left unused for a long time without charging, achieving the ability to charge as needed;
· No need to Replace Batteries:Lead-acid batteries need to be replaced every one or two years. Sodium batteries can undergo more than 2000 charging and discharging cycles and can be used for 8 to 10 years. Electric vehicles will no longer need to replace batteries in the future;
· Electric vehicles support fast charging: Sodium batteries support fast charging. They can be charged to 80% in just 10 minutes. You won't have to worry about running out of power when traveling;
· Improve the power performance of electric vehicles: Sodium batteries support ultra-high discharge rate of 5C. The current is large, and the performance of the motor is strong. Electric vehicles not only start quickly but can also easily handle uphill climbs.

Replace the lead-acid battery with a sodium battery. Replace these 4 components.
Sodium batteries can indeed enhance the performance of electric vehicles. If you want to replace lead-acid batteries with sodium batteries, simply purchasing the batteries is not enough. These four accessories must also be replaced simultaneously; otherwise, there will be significant safety risks!
· The battery compartment must be modified.
The energy density of sodium batteries is much higher than that of lead-acid batteries. With the same capacity, sodium batteries have a smaller volume. The original battery compartment was quite large, and simply placing sodium batteries in it would be inappropriate. The batteries would shake around inside, which not only could damage the connection wires but might even cause short circuits and fires.
Therefore, the battery compartment of the electric vehicle needs to be modified by installing fixed slots to ensure that the batteries can be securely fixed in the compartment, thus ensuring safety!
· A charger must be replaced.
This is extremely important. Lead-acid batteries operate in a pulse charging mode, while sodium batteries use a constant current and constant voltage charging method. The working principles of these two chargers are completely different.
If the lead-acid battery charger is still used to charge the sodium battery, it may fail to charge properly, or even cause the battery to bulge and catch fire. Therefore, a sodium battery-specific charger must be replaced.
· Sodium Battery Protection board must be installed.
Sodium batteries are similar to lithium batteries. They are composed of multiple series of sodium battery cells. In order to better manage these cells, a sodium battery protection board, also known as the Battery Management system, must be installed.
After installing the BMS, it functions like a brain, better managing current and voltage, effectively preventing overcharging and overdischarging, ensuring that each cell can operate normally and ensuring the safety of the sodium battery.
· It is recommended to replace the dashboard.
The detection of the battery level in lead-acid batteries is different from that in sodium batteries. Lead-acid batteries estimate the remaining Battery Power based on voltage, while sodium batteries accurately display the actual usage amount to show the battery level. The display logic of the two is completely different.
If the dashboard is not replaced, there may be inaccurate battery level display. The dashboard may show full battery, but the bike will suddenly run out of power after riding a few kilometers. Therefore, it is recommended to replace it with a dedicated dashboard for sodium batteries.

When converting from lead-acid batteries to sodium batteries,
there are three key points to keep in mind:
Apart from replacing the above components, after converting from lead-acid batteries to sodium batteries, you also need to pay attention to these two points. Otherwise, you may face penalties due to violations.
After replacing the lead-acid batteries with sodium batteries, the electric vehicle loses its warranty. If there are any quality issues with the electric vehicle, the manufacturer may directly refuse to provide the warranty. This point must be noted.
There is another more important point: changing from lead-acid batteries to lithium batteries is considered illegal modification. It alters the battery type and constitutes a change in the technical parameters of the vehicle. If caught by the traffic police, they may require restoration to the original state. In severe cases, fines and vehicle seizure may also be imposed.
If you have purchased compulsory insurance for an electric motorcycle and changed the battery type, in case of an accident, the insurance company may refuse to compensate. This point should also be clear to everyone.

Summary
After changing from lead-acid batteries to sodium batteries, the performance of electric vehicles can indeed be improved. It not only enables you to charge faster, but also ensures that the vehicle is not affected by cold in winter and has a longer service life. However, when changing to sodium batteries, it is necessary to replace the four components: battery compartment, charger, protection board, and dashboard. Otherwise, there may be a situation where the vehicle cannot be used normally. Additionally, it is important to note that after the modification, the vehicle may no longer be able to protect itself, and insurance may refuse to cover the cost.
